Please join us September 7th for the first session of the 2026/2027 edition of the Maritain Theology Forum! This week David O'Connor (Philosophy and Classics, University of Notre Dame) will present his paper, "Socrates in Gethsemane."
Each meeting consists of a presentation on a project in theology or an adjacent discipline, followed by a period of comments/questions from other participants. The workshop is designed to give contributors the opportunity to develop ideas and receive helpful feedback on projects/papers in a friendly and low stakes environment.
Lunch is provided for registered attendees.
Abstract: Jesus in sweat-stained prayer while his friends doze in the night, sleeping off their last supper; Socrates in cheerful conversation while his friends stay up all night, awake with convivial laughter and weeping: two ways to die, two literary classics. I will pursue some thoughts about the nature of dying, and the nature of reading.
