Biographical Overview

Born 30 September 1929, Germain Gabriel Grisez grew up University Heights, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. After attending a Catholic elementary school, he went to Cathedral Latin School (1943-1947) and John Carroll University (1947-1951). He finished the requirements for a bachelor's degree in Philosophy in three years, so he spent his senior year studying at the Dominican College of St. Thomas Aquinas in River Forest, Illinois (1950-1951).

On 9 June 1951 he married Jeannette Grisez and received a Licentiate (master's degree) in philosophy from Dominican College -- two days before he received his bachelor's degree from John Carroll. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago (1951-1959). He taught at Georgetown University (1957-1972), Campion College, University of Regina, Saskatchewan (1972-1979) and Mount St. Mary's College and Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland (1979-2009).

He remained in Emmitsburg until 2016 when he moved to Pennsylvania to live with his son. He died the first of February 2018.
