Antônio Lemos

Biography

Antônio Lemos hails from Curitiba, Brazil. He first studied law at the Universidade Federal do Paraná before completing degrees in philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum in Rome. There, he earned a master’s degree in theology with a specialization in moral theology and Catholic social teaching, writing a master’s thesis entitled “Migration Ethics in Catholic Social Teaching.”

He earned his PhD at the University of Notre Dame under the supervision of Prof. Jean Porter. His doctoral dissertation, “The Right to Travel and Dwell in Francisco de Vitoria and Domingo de Soto: A Historical Retrieval of the Right to Migrate in Catholic Social Teaching,” offers a historical and theological account of the foundations of the right to migration. During his doctoral studies, he was a graduate fellow at various institutes and centers such as the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good, the De Nicola Center for Ethics and Culture, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the Klau Institute for Civil and Human Rights. His dissertation received a fellowship from the Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition at Loyola University Chicago.

His ongoing research focuses on migration ethics in the Catholic moral tradition, with particular attention to its theological and ethical foundations and to its historical development, especially by the School of Salamanca. His additional research interests include virtue ethics, economics, business ethics, and bioethics.
