Maritain Fellows

The Maritain Fellows program of the Maritain Center is founded to provide fellowship and intellectual formation for students at the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's College, and Holy Cross College who wish to closely study and discuss fundamental questions in philosophy and related disciplines, particularly as informed by the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and Jacques Maritain’s vision of “integral Christian humanism,” but also more broadly from the great traditions of reasoning in conversation with faith.

The Maritain Fellows bring leading scholars to campus for invited lectures and provide fellows with the opportunity to personally engage with the speakers through dinners, workshops, and seminars. Furthermore, the Maritain Fellows provide forums for discussion among students and faculty about key philosophical questions, facilitated both through formal academic events and informal social gatherings.

Graduate Maritain Fellows

The graduate branch of the Maritain Fellows program seeks to promote academic discussion of philosophy and the Catholic intellectual tradition, placing particular emphasis on the thought of the 13th-century philosopher and theologian, Thomas Aquinas. In addition to the academic programming outlined above, the Graduate Maritain Fellows promote communal and spiritual formation through extra-curricular activities and organized liturgy and prayer. Graduate students from all disciplines at the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College are encouraged to join the Maritain Fellows program.

Undergraduate Maritain Fellows

The undergraduate branch of the Maritain Fellows provides selected undergraduate students from the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, and Holy Cross College with the opportunity to closely study and discuss fundamental questions in philosophy and related disciplines.

The Undergraduate Maritain Fellows are encouraged to develop capacities as both leaders and scholars. The chapter is administered by students, giving them an opportunity to closely work with the university and leading scholars across disciplines. The program also supports undergraduate research, especially through research funding and an annual essay competition. Fellows are also able to foster a close relationship with scholars associated the Maritain Center.
